Current AEW Star Once Planned As Running Over Steve Austin WWE

A current AEW name was reportedly planned for the running over Stone Cold Steve Austin angle which began at Survivor Series 1999.

During the event, Austin was hit by a car, taking him out of that night’s main event bout. This led to one of wrestling’s most famous whodunnits, with Triple H eventually being revealed to have been the mystery attacker.

Per former WWE writer Brian Gewirtz, current AEW commentator Taz was at one point set to be the assailant behind the wheel.

Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Gewirtz said:

“I remember at one point Vince looked at me and was like, ‘Taz.’ At one point, it was gonna be Taz. Okay, great. Let’s make it Taz. Then, you know, for whatever reason, the next week, it’s someone different. I wouldn’t call that necessarily a success.

“Rikishi is a Hall of Fame performer, but he’s likable and a natural babyface, and people want to like him. Sometimes you just don’t know until you try. Then ultimately, it was Rikishi, but Triple H was behind it all along, and you know, it went back to the natural order of things.”

Taz started appearing for AEW in 2019 before officially signing with the promotion in 2020.

The former ECW and WWE star was recently on commentary to call his son Hook winning the FTW Championship on the July 27 edition of Dynamite.
