AEW star Wheeler Yuta has been mathematically eliminated from the NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 29 round robin tournament.
Yuta was defeated by El Phantasmo during today’s (May 29) show in tournament action. Yuta’s loss means it’s now mathematically impossible for him to lead the B Block.
With one match to go each, the ROH Pure Champion has 8 points, to El Desperado’s 10, Robbie Eagles’ 10 and El Phantasmo’s 12.
Yuta has suffered tournament defeats to Eagles, El Desperado El Lindaman and El Phantasmo. While not completely dominant, Yuta’s NJPW run has been interesting, with the star paying homage to his Blackpool Combat Club teammates Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley in various ways.
Also currently sitting on 8 points in the B Block is Yuta’s final tournament opponent TJP, as well as El Lindaman. Yuta will face TJP on Tuesday (March 31).
IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Taiji Ishimori is currently leading the A Block with 12 points, with Hiromu Takahashi and IMPACT X Division Champion Ace Austin both on 10 points.
Ishimori and Takahashi will face off on Tuesday’s show. Ishimori needs to defeat Takahashi and for Austin to lose his final match to win the block, Austin would need to win his match and Ishimori to defeat Takahashi for him to win the block due to previous tiebreakers. Takahashi has the most favorable position of A Block, only needing to win his match to win the block.
