
Following the backstage fight between CM Punk, Ace Steel and the Elite, all parties involved were suspended by the company, with the AEW World Championship and AEW Trios Championship being vacated.
To crown the new AEW World Champion, Tony Khan announced an AEW World Championship Tournament of Champions, culminating in a match for the vacant title at AEW Dynamite Grand Slam in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The first round took place last week, with Bryan Danielson defeating Adam Page on Dynamite, while Sammy Guevara bested Darby Allin on Rampage to advance to the semi-finals.
Jon Moxley was victorious in the opening match of tonight’s AEW Dynamite show, defeating Sammy Guevara to earn his place in the final.
Then in the main event, fellow Blackpool Combat Club member Bryan Danielson defeated Chris Jericho, officially setting up a rematch between Bryan and Moxley for the title on next week’s show.
Also announced for the show tonight was an AEW All-Atlantic Championship match between Pac and Orange Cassidy, as well as a four-way for the interim AEW Women’s World Championship between Toni Storm, Athena, Britt Baker and Serena Deeb.
