Mercedes Mone has reflected on her match at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door and how it may have led to a WWE signing.
At the June 30 PPV, the AEW TBS Champion faced the NJPW Strong Women’s Champion Stephanie Vaquer in a Winner Takes All Match.
Mone would win that match with Vaquer going on to sign with WWE, as confirmed by Shawn Michaels, in July 2024.
The AEW star has now reflected upon her match with Vaquer and how she feels it may have had a hand in the WWE signing.
Writing in the recent Mone Mag, the AEW TBS Champion reflected on a time when she had little preparation ahead of a match, noting:
“Another time was with Stephanie Vaquer for AEW’s Forbidden Door. Stephanie flew in that day and got to the building maybe an hour before the doors opened.
“We just talked about the match a little where she speaks a whole different language (Spanish). That was so hard. I’m like, my God, we don’t get time to walk over our moves, we speak two different languages, and we’re both tired, jet lagged, and hungry, too. Yet, that also turned out to be such a great match.
“She was signed by the WWE days later. I’d like to think our match had a say in that!”
Vaquer recently made her WWE televised debut on NXT with it later being reported that officials were “very happy” with how it was received.
With Giulia and Vaquer in an alliance on WWE NXT, the pair have recently commented about their on-screen friendship having previously been rivals.
Despite being yet to have her first televised WWE match, Vaquer has competed twice in the ring since signing beating Isla Dawn.
