AJ Styles Names His Greatest WWE Feud

Signed with WWE since January 2016, AJ Styles has reflected on what he considers to be his greatest feud during his storied run.

AJ Styles debuted at the 2016 Royal Rumble and would see Chris Jericho, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns among his early opponents.

In a career that has seen him become a WWE Grand Slam Champion, AJ Styles was asked about his greatest feud during a recent appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, revealing:

“I think the one that got the most eyes was me and John Cena. But the match that I had with Roman was really freaking good.

“At no point in that match did they go, you can’t wrestle to Roman, because he was freaking bringing it.

“He was all about, he was in it. I’m not saying it’s me, we had the opportunity to gel really well together, and he was tearing it up. It was awesome.

“I’m kind of sad that I never get to run that back a little bit with Roman, Dean Ambrose and (Chris) Jericho and the rest, all these guys who were high-level names in WWE.”

Having enjoyed a prolific career on the international scene prior to joining WWE, Styles would also look to his work in NJPW and TNA Wrestling when it comes to great feuds, noting:

“Then, if we’re not talking about WWE, then we can talk about (Hiroshi) Tanahashi and (Kazuchika) Okada. I wish I had more matches with Shinsuke (Nakamura), but then we had Abyss, Christopher Daniels, Samoa Joe, Kurt Angle.”

In 2016, AJ Styles would face Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship at Payback in May, facing him once against at Extreme Rules later that year.

Pick A Feud, Any Feud, Every One Is A Winner

For some stars, any feud they enter has the potential to be great and it’s only in retrospect that this is fully realized.

AJ Styles is a prime example of a veteran star who has stepped into the ring with some of the greats of their time and the future greats.

There’s little argument that GUNTHER, his final opponent, will go on to have a legendary career in WWE and could very well be considered one of the greatest stars of his generation. Styles would reflect the decision to be retired by GUNTHER during his appearance on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, noting that the star had already ended the in-ring careers of Goldberg and John Cena, both stars that very much fitting that “greats” mold.

Even in the last months of his career, AJ Styles was in the ring with stars who will likely be recognized as future greats. Saturday Night’s Main Event in December saw Styles team with Dragon Lee to take on Je’Von Evans and TNA Wrestling’s Leon Slater in an exhibition match.

A career that spanned twenty-six years, taking in promotions around the globe, with successful runs in TNA Wrestling, NJPW and WWE, it’s no wonder that there’s such a wealth of opportunity to name a feud that stands out for AJ Styles.

As for his future, he remains with WWE in a capacity that now sees him seek a star to become “the next Phenomenal One“.
