Ahead of Clash At The Castle, former WWE Champion AJ Styles has discussed parallels to his and Mark Henry’s fake retirements.
At WWE Clash At The Castle, Cody Rhodes defeated AJ Styles to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship in an I Quit Match.
To earn this title shot, Styles suckered in Rhodes with a faux retirement promo on the May 31 edition of Friday Night SmackDown.
Immediately following the segment, many fans made comparisons and drew parallels between AJ’s fake retirement angle and Mark Henry’s faux retirement promo from 2013.
Speaking with Fightful’s Corey Brennan ahead of WWE Clash At The Castle, AJ Styles discussed the comparisons were completely intentional because nothing would ever work out that well. He said:
“All of them are happy accidents. Nothing’s ever — you don’t plan it. Well, I wouldn’t say that. My gear is a little bit different. My gear is planned but when it comes to promos, not really.”
Styles was announced to face Japanese legend Naomichi Marufuji on Saturday, July 13 at NOAH’s Destination event.
