There have been very few WWE signings who have skipped NXT but the biggest has to be AJ Styles.
Styles recently spoke on Out of Character with Ryan Satin, and talked about how he was happy to get the opportunity to skip NXT. Here is the quote, courtesy of Fightful:
“Absolutely, the fact that Samoa Joe was still in NXT and I was able to jump the line I was like, ‘Okay.’ I was not going to argue with them about it. I was happy to get the opportunity.”
AJ Styles also revealed why he thinks he got to skip NXT, citing the timing of being able to debut at the Royal Rumble in Orlando as a possible reason.
“Timing. I think that had a lot to do with it. Being in Orlando was a huge thing for me, being in TNA for so long. Then, to have the opportunity to be number three, as crazy as that sounds, in the Royal Rumble, was huge for me. It was huge.”
Since his WWE debut, AJ Styles has only made a small number of appearances on NXT. These came in late 2019 when WWE was attempting to load up NXT with main roster stars to combat AEW Dynamite.
