Alberto El Patron (Alberto Del Rio) has reacted to CM Punk’s AEW World Championship victory at Double or Nothing.
Punk defeated Hangman Page for the gold in the main event of Sunday’s pay-per-view, making him the fifth man to hold the gold, and the third AEW World Champion to have previously held the WWE Championship.
One of Punk’s previous WWE Championship rivals, Alberto reached out to Punk on Twitter. Sharing a photo of Punk holding the gold, Alberto wrote:
Congratulations @CMPunk ???
Alberto cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to win the WWE Championship from Punk at SummerSlam 2011. Punk eventually won the gold back at Survivor Series 2011, and notably went on to hold the gold for 434 days.
Alberto has been a controversial name in wrestling for some time, recently involved in a backstage incident at a wrestling show in Mexico, allegedly forcing his way into the building after turning up late.
Previously, serious aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault charges against Alberto were dropped in December 2021.
Following the case closing, Alberto claimed that him signing with AEW in the future is ‘possible’.
Two former WWE stars did join AEW during Double or Nothing, which you can read more about right here.
