Alexa Bliss Illness Caused Change To WWE Extreme Rules Card

This week on Raw, Nikki Cross defeated Bayley in a Beat-The-Clock challenge to earn the right to pick the stipulation for Alexa Bliss and Bayley’s Smackdown Women’s Championship match at Extreme Rules.

Cross chose to add herself to Sunday’s bout and make it a two-on-one handicap match. Nikki then promised that her and Alexa will become the first Co-Smackdown Women’s Champions.

Despite having a pay-per-view championship match on Sunday, Alexa Bliss was missing from both Raw and Smackdown this week. It was believed that sickness forced her to miss the shows.

However, Dave Meltzer has revealed on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio that Bliss is dealing with a nasty sinus infection. He also confirmed that her illness forced the planned singles match to be changed. Reportedly, the plan was never to have a two-on-one handicap match:

“This match actually has an interesting story, so Alexa Bliss has a really bad sinus infection. Originally they were not going to do a handicap match. The handicap match was a late change and everything that happened this Tuesday without Alexa Bliss was because of her sinus infection and they re-wrote that whole storyline so they may have done an Alexa Bliss/Bayley beat the clock challenge, but the reason that made no sense was because the end result was because of Alexa Bliss’ condition they are going to do a handicap match to protect Alexa. So in doing that they had to come up with a reason and they had this beat the clock thing. So you know Nikki Cross had to win. Then even though Nikki Cross is a babyface she had to ask for the handicap match.”

It was rumoured earlier on this week that Cross was only added to the championship match due to the fact that Bliss was sick. However, this has now been confirmed.

It is also being speculated that after being spotted training in Japan, Sasha Banks could make her return to WWE on Sunday to even the odds for best friend Bayley.
