It was reported shortly before the AEW All Out pay-per-view earlier this month that AEW star Malakai Black had requested his release from the company, with him later being granted his conditional release from the company.
With Black seemingly done with AEW for the foreseeable future, the question was asked of what would happen to the remaining members of the House of Black (Brody King, Buddy Matthews and Julia Hart) in AEW.
The group was set to go forward with Buddy and Brody as a tag team, with Julia as their manager, still using the House of Black name, which AEW recently trademarked.
However, it turns out that may now no longer be the case, per Fightful Select (subscription required), Buddy Matthews is also reportedly set to be done with the company for a while.
Matthews last wrestled for AEW at Rampage: Grand Slam, teaming with Brody King to face off against Sting & Darby Allin. In the closing moments of the match, the Great Muta made a shock appearance and sprayed green mist in Matthews’ face, before Sting dropped Matthews with a Scorpion Death Drop.
Fightful reports that this spot was intended to write Matthews off TV. While it is currently unclear whether Matthews has been released by AEW, the popular star has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction regarding his situation on numerous occasions over the past few months.
Following a his match at a Fight Life Pro Wrestling show this weekend, Matthews addressed the crowd, noting:
“Unfortunately, tonight, I’m going to be the bearer of some unfortunate news. As everyone knows, the House of Black has had some issues lately. As all the members of the house, I speak beyond the wall, we want to thank you all for being members of the house.
“Unfortunately, I, like some of the other members, need to go away for a while. I need to recalibrate. I need to figure out some things. As my brother Malakai once said, this isn’t goodbye, this is see you later.”
It was reported that more AEW names other than Malakai Black had requested their release from the company, but it has not yet been confirmed if Buddy was one of those names, or what the reason is for his sudden departure.
