The Ring Of Honor Women’s World Championship changed hands during the ROH Final Battle pay-per-view.
In the second match of the main card, Mercedes Martinez defended her gold against Athena in singles action.
The match was a back-and-forth ordeal, with both women bringing the aggression.
In the closing moments of the bout, Athena ripped the turnbuckle pad off.
After distracting the referee, Athena dropkicked Martinez so the back of her head collided with the exposed turnbuckle.
Athena capitalised, dropping Martinez with her signature ‘O-Face’ cutter to secure the victory.
This is Athena’s first reign with the ROH Women’s Championship. Martinez was recognised as the third champion in the title’s history.
Martinez became the interim titleholder at Supercard of Honor in April, before defeating lineal champion Deonna Purrazzo to become the official champion on the May 4 edition of Dynamite.
