Backstage details on the AEW Double or Nothing main event and Hangman Adam Page’s victory have been revealed.
The Owen Hart Foundation Tournament finals took place at last Sunday’s AEW Double or Nothing pay-per-view event, with Mercedes Mone defeating Jamie Hayter to win the women’s tournament in the opening match.
The final of the men’s tournament closed out the show, with Hangman Adam Page defeating Will Ospreay to win the Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament and earn a shot at the AEW World Championship at All In on July 12.
Ahead of the show, Fightful Select had reported that the finish to the match was being kept under wraps heading into the show, and there has now been more information on the ending of the match.
Per Fightful Select (subscription required), the result of the match being kept under wraps extended to the performers themselves, with Fightful Select noting that it was indicated to them that the two found out earlier in the weekend.
Fightful notes that Hangman had actually pitched for Will Ospreay to win the match, while Ospreay had pushed for Hangman to win.
Those that spoke to Fightful said that Tony Khan was non committal throughout the process when talent would ask him who was winning, with the feeling backstage after Hangman’s victory being that of ‘shock’, as most believed that Ospreay would end up winning.
In regards to AEW World Champion Jon Moxley, Fightful heard that he had leaned towards wanting Hangman to win the match too, but it isn’t known if that had any bearing on the actual match.
The match was received incredibly well backstage, with Fightful being told that the general feeling about the event was overwhelmingly positive, which is in line with recent reports about morale in the company being high recently.
It is noted that, while there is always value in the opinions of others, the decision and booking is Tony Khan’s, with him ultimately having the say on Hangman winning,
