Backstage News on Tommaso Ciampa and Randy Orton’s Twitter Exchange

Randy Orton is making lots of headlines as we head into Backlash this weekend. AEW superstars are giving him praise. There’s lots of spoilers and backstage details coming out related to his and Edge’s match.

He also is getting lots of attention for some of his comments related to NXT TakeOver: In Your House and Tommaso Ciampa. On the Tuesday edition of Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez addressed the Twitter exchange between the two.

Typically, when two WWE Superstars go at it on social media, they have the approval to do so. It’s apparently one of Vince McMahon’s unwritten rules that you don’t do this kind of thing unless you are hyping up a match.

So, could is WWE setting up a match between the two? Alvarez had this to say:

“Randy Orton made a tweet on Sunday, and he was talking about how much ‘thigh-slapping’ there was on the NXT show, and then Ciampa fired back and said, my daughter couldn’t sleep, and I showed her one of your matches, and then Randy Orton fired back. Dave talked about this for 15 minutes last night, and here’s what I know today everyone.

“This was not done to set up a match. This was both guys; I’m sure they may have DMed each other and said, ‘Hey, I’m going to say this and whatever,’ I mean, but nothing was done with the idea that Randy Orton and Tommaso Ciampa are going to have a match, or that Ciampa is going up to the main roster. I’m not saying he’s not going to the main roster.

All of this was these two guys did something and now everbody’s talking about it. The impression I was given is that Vince wasn’t happy about this because…Vince hates it when guys or women or whatever do something that teases a match that he’s not going to do. He hates that, but it’s he starts booking something and it doesn’t pay off that’s fine.”

With Charlotte heading off of NXT most likely, could WWE turn this Twitter beef into a match? Maybe Vince will see the reaction and decide Randy Orton is the next main roster star he sends down to NXT to boost ratings.
