Some backstage news has emerged regarding referees in WWE following a reported botched finish to a match on this past Monday’s episode of Raw.
The match in question was the New Day vs the Hurt Business, with reports that the double count-out wasn’t planned and everyone had to scramble around to figure out what to do when it happened.
PWInsider is reporting that the reason for the double count-out was that there’s been a “renewed push” in WWE for the referees to enforce rules legitimately.
That means, for example, if someone doesn’t get back in the ring on time, the ref should count them out even if it isn’t the necessarily the plan – which is exactly what happened on Raw.
We’ve seen this a lot lately, and while it can often be a positive thing, WWE has a tendency to just change the rules whenever it suits them so it often just results in some messy situations, such as the “illegal man attacked the legal man” nonsense we’ve seen pop up in tag matches a couple of times.
