The backstage reaction to WWE changing Pete Dunne’s ring name has been revealed.
On Friday’s episode of SmackDown, the former NXT UK Champion aligned himself with Sheamus and Ridge Holland. Dunne was referred to by his new name, Butch.
Fightful Select (subscription required) reports that prior to the episode, WWE sources told them that ‘something very dumb’ was happening on SmackDown. Numerous individuals added that a star that many already knew was set to undergo a name change.
The report noted that some wrestlers outside of WWE knew about the name change as far back as Thursday. It had been speculated that ‘Butch’ was a ‘Bushwhakers rib’, as Ridge Holland’s real name is Luke. Another former WWE talent reportedly thought the name was a reference to the Little Rascals.
‘Butch’s appearance on SmackDown was reportedly his official main roster call-up, with WWE. originally planning for him to team with Sheamus and Ridge Holland to take on The New Day at WrestleMania 38. It is unknown how these plans will be altered, following Big E’s injury on the show.
