The news of Cesaro shockingly leaving WWE after his contract expired has caught many within WWE by surprise.
Per Fightful Select, the immediate backstage reaction is of “disappointment and dismay” over Cesaro’s departure due to the Swiss Superman being one of the most well liked talents in the locker room.
The report also indicates that this was not a case of WWE not wanting the star. WWE sources actually confirmed that they offered a new contract that was declined.
Cesaro has lost his last seven televised matches dating back to November with his last appearance on the February 11 episode of SmackDown in a loss to Happy Corbin.
There was reportedly no long-term creative planned for Cesaro because WWE didn’t want to commit to something before he re-signed. This is similar to what happened last year when WWE had planned to showcase Cesaro in a SmackDown gauntlet match, but opted to showcase Shinsuke Nakamura instead because Cesaro hadn’t agreed to a new deal at the time.
As previously noted, WWE and Cesaro couldn’t reach an agreement on a new contract thus its expiration means he will not have a 90 day non-compete clause.
We will have further updates on Cesaro when they become available.
