Oops.
WWE announced on the most recent edition of Main Event that Asuka would be defending her SmackDown Women’s Championship at Royal Rumble against former champion Becky Lynch.
However, former SmackDown GM Paige has since tweeted that that match is actually NOT official.
Soooo I tried to make one last match before my time as #SDLive GM came to end…but unfortunately @BeckyLynchWWE vs. @WWEAsuka for the Smackdown Women’s Championship is NOT official for #RoyalRumble. #Oops

It is possible that the match was planned before WWE shook things up on Monday’s Raw, which saw the contractual championship rematch clause abolished, and wasn’t removed from the edit of the pre-recorded Main Event.
Paige was removed from the GM position this past Tuesday on SmackDown, with Vince, Shane, Steph and Triple H now the four authority figures at the head of Raw and SmackDown, leaving Paige quite the handy scapegoat in this instance.
Asuka of course defeated then-champion Lynch and Charlotte Flair in a TLC match at the TLC pay-per-view this past Sunday to win the title, thanks to interference from Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey.
