Here’s The Booking Advice CM Punk Gave Tony Khan Before SmackDown Vs. AEW Rampage

Some details on advice CM Punk gave Tony Khan before last week’s AEW Rampage vs WWE SmackDown head-to-head have come to light.

CM Punk was a big part of the battle, as his match with Matt Sydal opened Rampage and led the way for the show to beat SmackDown in the half-hour crossover in the key 18-49 demo.

In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it was noted that Punk specifically advised Tony Khan not to change his booking plans for the show in response to SmackDown announcing an extra half-hour.

The Rampage card had already been booked before the announcement of the ‘SuperSized’ SmackDown, and Punk told Khan to leave it as it was instead of changing anything.

While Khan didn’t change anything about Rampage itself, he did air a one-hour pre-show on YouTube headlined by Bryan Danielson vs Minoru Suzuki.

CM Punk also specifically asked to open the show – which was probably the plan anyway – because he was confident he could “take that bullet”.

It turns out he was right, because his match with Sydal performed better than Becky Lynch vs Sasha Banks in 18-49, and then The Bunny vs Ruby Soho performed equal to the Brock Lesnar/Roman Reigns contract signing segment, leading to a Rampage victory.
