Bret Hart Details Original Lay Out For Montreal Screwjob Match With Shawn Michaels WWE

Bret Hart has detailed the original lay out for the Montreal Screwjob match with Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1997.

Today marks 25 years since the infamous Montreal Screwjob when Vince McMahon came to ringside and demanded the bell to ring as Shawn Michaels had Bret Hart in the sharpshooter at Survivor Series 1997.

The “screwjob” transpired due to fear that the Hitman would take the WWE Championship to WCW after not agreeing to lose to HBK at the event.

The Survivor Series 1997 bout only lasted 12 minutes before the infamous moment occurred and Hart has revealed that he believes the match would have been a classic otherwise.

Speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, the WWE Hall of Famer discussed the Montreal Screwjob.

He said:

“We had another 25 minutes. The match was already good, and we hadn’t even hit our stride. Even when we didn’t get along, Shawn and I always had great chemistry together in the ring.

“When we worked together, we wanted to be flawless, and we didn’t get along, and that added to the intensity.”

“When I clothesline Shawn over the top rope and we brawl and fight outside the ring, I could tell it was going to be a really special match.”

Hart continued on to discuss how he felt at the start of the contest, saying:

“It was very competitive. That match was just starting. All the brawling was done just to set up the actual match.”

“It was going to really get going after I reversed his sharpshooter. We pictured the crowd standing up and going crazy. That was going to be the moment when it took off.”

As previously reported, Jim Ross has addressed the backstage atmosphere in WWE following the Montreal Screwjob.
