After his last minute addition to the title match, Brock Lesnar pinned Big E at WWE Day 1 to win the WWE Championship for the sixth time.
Lesnar’s first reign with the WWE Title began at SummerSlam 2002, after The Beast defeated The Rock for the gold over 19 years ago. It has been pointed out in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Lesnar is now the star with the longest time between his first WWE Title reign and his latest.
This record was previously held by Hulk Hogan, with 18 years separating The Hulkster’s 1984 and 2002 title reigns. Bob Backlund had 17 years between his first and last WWE Championship wins, in 1977 and 1994 respectively.
Recent reports have stated that plans for the WWE and Universal Championship matches at WrestleMania, as well as plans for Lesnar and Reigns’ feud, will remain the same, despite Lesnar’s WWE Championship win.
The Beast will defend his gold against Bobby Lashley at Royal Rumble later this month.
