Amid uncertainty regarding his AEW status, Buddy Matthews has confirmed his in-ring hiatus.
Fightful recently reported that Buddy Matthews’ spot with the Great Muta at AEW Rampage: Grand Slam was intended to write him off TV. While it’s reportedly unclear whether or not Matthews has been let go by the company, it was noted that the star has expressed dissatisfaction regarding his situation on numerous occasions over the past few months.
Fight Life Pro Wrestling has now shared a video of Matthews addressing the crowd following his match on the promotion’s September 24 show. Confirming that he has chosen to step away from the ring ‘for a while’, Matthews said:
“Unfortunately, tonight, I’m going to be the bearer of some unfortunate news. As everyone knows, the House of Black has had some issues lately. As all the members of the house, I’m speaking for them all, we want to thank you all for being members of the house.
“Unfortunately, I, like some of the other members, need to go away for a while. I need to recalibrate. I need to figure out some things. As my brother Malakai once said, this isn’t goodbye, this is see you later.”
Malakai Black notably addressed the crowd in a similar fashion at a Prestige Wrestling show on September 17, before confirming that he had requested his AEW release in a statement shared the following day.
While Black didn’t explicitly state that his release was granted, it is believed that he has a lengthy non-compete clause, and wouldn’t be able to wrestle for WWE for ‘quite some time.’
We will continue to provide updates as they become available.
