Butch Reveals William Regal & Bryan Danielson Inspired His Character Change WWE

WWE SmackDown star Butch (Pete Dunne) has revealed that two popular AEW stars inspired his current character.

‘Butch’ made his main roster debut in March, aligning himself with Sheamus and Ridge Holland. His debut was met with criticism from fans who wanted to see ‘Pete Dunne’ on the main roster.

Speaking with Metro.co.uk, Butch noted that he had William Regal’s earlier WWE run, and Bryan Danielson’s ‘Team Hell No’ stint in mind when changing up his character.

Discussing his motivation for who we now know as ‘Butch’, the WWE star said:

“My biggest inspirations in wrestling are people like Regal – some of his best work was the straightlaced stuff later in his career, right? But earlier in his run he was the commissioner doing all sorts of funny stuff. People like Daniel Bryan, when he was here – part of what got him, where he was, was the stuff with Kane. Everyone has variety, you can’t just be one thing forever and I’ve been with the company for six years.”

“It’s refreshing for me personally, to be able to focus on something else and have a different approach to it. And sort of broaden my horizons with wrestling because it’s been so long.

“I’m just looking at it as an amazing opportunity, and just embracing and having fun with it. Working with Sheamus and Ridge is great too, so I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

Regal recently commented on comedy wrestling, stating that he’d be open to working with the more comical performers on AEW’s roster.

Bryan Danielson is slated to appear on this week’s edition of Dynamite ahead of Forbidden Door. There is currently some uncertainty surrounding Danielson’s status for the event, which you can read more about right here.
