Apollo Crews captured his first WWE championship last night on Raw. He defeated Andrade to become the United States Champion, a move that surprised some fans.
Now, we know when we will see his first title defense. The company announced that we will see Crews defend the title next week on Raw against an opponent of his choosing. Here is the quote from their website:
“Newly crowned United States Champion Apollo Crews is not going to be taking a breather after winning the title. Next week on Raw, Crews will defend his title against an opponent of his choosing.
Who will Crews select? Will they play spoiler for the new champion? Find out on Raw, next Monday at 8/7 C on USA!”
This is not the first time the United States Championship has been defended in a sort of open challenge. John Cena famously defended the title week after week in 2015 to great critical acclaim. It is unclear whether Crews’ title defenses will be weekly like this or rather just a way to get his reign off and running.
Crews was going to compete in the Money in the Bank ladder match before being removed due to injury. All of this was in storyline of course but it is nice to see him get a measure of retribution.
