It appears that AEW may be making some changes to Jim Ross’ role within the company and on the announcing team.
This started at Forbidden Door, but was followed up on during last night’s AEW Dynamite and Rampage tapings as well.
At Forbidden Door, Ross only called the final four matches of the show alongside Excalibur, Taz, and NJPW’s Kevin Kelly, with the other three having been present for the whole show including the pre-show.
At the time you might have thought that was just a one-off, but for last night’s Dynamite, the announce team for the first hour was Excalibur, Taz and Tony Schiavone, with Ross replacing Schiavone in the second hour for the Blood & Guts match.
Ross also called the matches that were taped after Dynamite for this coming Friday’s episode of Rampage. The only other time Ross has called Rampage was for CM Punk’s debut last August.
JR announced last month that he’d signed a contract extension to stay with AEW for another year-and-a-half.
It’s not confirmed that there’s been any official change to his role, status or job title, but there definitely seems to be some experimenting going on.
