News that comes as a surprise to no-one. Dave Meltzer has reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE is trying to get Charlotte Flair to 17 titles as soon as possible in order for her to overtake her father’s record.
Following her minute-long reign at Money in the Bank, Charlotte currently sits at 9 reigns, which is pretty insane when you think that she only debuted on the main roster in July 2015.
Whether Ric Flair’s recent poor health has anything to do with WWE’s desire to get Charlotte to that magical 17 is unclear, but what it does mean is that the SmackDown Women’s title will likely be hot-potatoed around to make it easier for Charlotte to keep building up the reigns.
This will likely devalue the belt and also Charlotte’s reigns if they don’t last longer than a month. It also means that Charlotte will be in pretty much every title feud going forward, so I hope you like figure-8 leg locks and big boots!
There’s plenty of debate as to whether Ric Flair’s total of 16 world championships is valid, given that he himself claims to be a 21-time champion, but as it’s the figure that WWE recognises that counts, 17 is still the magic number for Charlotte to reach.
