An AEW star has broken character and revealed that a recent opponent was a ‘challenge.’
Chris Jericho successfully defended his Ring of Honor Championship at AEW Full Gear against Claudio Castagnoli, Bryan Danielson and Sammy Guevara.
After this title defence, Orange Cassidy issued Jericho a challenge, revealing he had a friend who wished to fight him on the next edition of Dynamite.
That friend was former NEVER Openweight Champion and two-time Undisputed British Heavyweight Champion Tomohiro Ishii.
In a brutal match-up, Tomohiro Ishii chopped Jericho’s chest until it bled.
After a suplex, Ishii appeared to collapse. Jericho delivered a Lionsault but his patience wore thin when Ishii kicked out after one count.
Jericho managed to retain the title via submission after trapping Ishii with the Liontamer.
The Ocho has since reflected on the match in a new video shared by AEW.
Jericho noted:
“(Tomohiro) Ishii, I’ve known him for 26 years ever since we worked for Tenryu-san (Genichiro Tenryu) in WAR.
“He is a tremendous professional wrestler, great strong style, great fighting spirit and very much of a challenge for me.
“Even though I beat him, I had respect for Ishii and I hope that we can face each other again so I can punch him in his stupid face another time.”
After winning the ROH World Championship from Claudio Castagnoli in September, Jericho vowed to defeat every former ROH titleholder.
Chris Jericho currently has an AEW win/loss record of 17/8
