Chris Jericho And Miro Shoot On The WWE Style

Chris Jericho and Miro both spent a long time in the WWE system. It was the place Jericho spent the majority of his career. As such, both have a pretty good idea of how the WWE style works. Now, they have both commented on it.

During Miro’s appearance on Talk is Jericho, they discussed how limiting the WWE match-style is. Miro began by saying that in AEW everyone gets to work their style but in WWE you have one formula. Here is the quote:

“Professional wrestling is like martial arts. When you look at martial arts you have different divisions of martial arts. You have karate, judo, this kind of stuff. So I feel like pro wrestling is the same way when you have your strong style, you have your lucha libre, you have your sports entertainment with WWE. You have all these different styles around the world but the beautiful thing about AEW is they let you execute your style.

You don’t have to- if you come to Japan, ‘okay work our style, WWE style’. No. You come to Japan you work your Japanese style, you come from Mexico you work that. That’s why the beautiful thing about AEW is you see all these different styles from all over the world like Bloodsport coming in and combining, creating this huge event on a week to week basis. With these four, five, six, ten star matches, whatever Meltzer rates them these days.

While on the other side, and I’m not burying WWE by any means, but they just have one style, one formula. That’s it. While here, you have everything.”

Chris Jericho then chimed in by saying virtually every WWE match is the same. He used Keith Lee as an example of someone who had a unique style but hasn’t been able to utilize it in WWE.

“Yeah and that goes for NXT as well, it is the same formulaic match. Anywhere you watch, if you see that WWE logo you know exactly what kind of a match you are going to get. And there’s a couple guys who execute it differently but it’s pretty much always the same pattern. We don’t have that here and we don’t expect that. Like you said, if you work with me I’ll have my certain way of doing things but it is always with the intention of letting you be you. Just let me throw it throw my filing cabinet here and then let’s make it happen.

There’s so many things that you’ll see sometimes where a guy will come in, a guy like Keith Lee for example, known for being a very agile big guy with flips and flops and such and there’s a place for that but in WWE there’s none of it. Like ‘don’t do anything anymore’. Kind of takes away the individuality of the performers, you know.”

Finally, Miro connected the limitations with WWE stars’ ability to get themselves over.

“It becomes one dive a night, one dropkick a night, but that’s what I’m known for. Now you’re taking that away from me. What am I supposed to do? It is so limited as to how can one get over, while if they want you to get over you can pretty much take your pants off. Nobody cares. That’s where the unfairness comes from because its not predetermined finishes, its predetermined success.”

Miro was on the WWE main roster from 2014 until 2020 when he was released on Black Wednesday. He has since made his debut with AEW as ‘The Best Man’. Meanwhile, Chris Jericho made headlines when he was one of the first to sign with AEW back in 2019 effectively ending his run with WWE.
