Chris Jericho Addresses Controversial AEW Win AEW

Chris Jericho has addressed criticism surrounding him defeating Eddie Kingston in their barbed wire match at Dynamite: Fyter Fest.

In the main event of the July 20 show, Jericho defeated Kingston in the culmination of their rivalry.

The bout was heavily criticised following Jericho’s win, as many believed the story was building towards Kingston finally getting his revenge on the top star.

Speaking on his Talk Is Jericho podcast, Jericho explained that he couldn’t lose any matches on the lead-up to his AEW World Title bout against Jon Moxley at the August 10 Quake By The Lake special.

Discussing the bout, Jericho said:

“This was a really good match, we got cut short at the end, which was kind of a drag. Super violent, lots of gimmicks and barbed wire. We were getting rushed at the end.

“It’s live TV and some other people might have gone long with segments, whatever it was. I think we only had 13 or 14 minutes to go through this thing.

“For me, because (CM) Punk was the champ and he got hurt and then Tony (Khan) wanted Mox (Jon Moxley) and I to work for the title, I couldn’t lose that match because I’m challenging for the championship.

“Had I not been challenging for the championship, Eddie probably would have won. He still got the moral victory when he tossed me into the barbed wire at the end. Even though it was rushed, we still had to get it done.”

Jericho recently dropped his ROH World Championship, losing the gold to Claudio Castagnoli in the main event of the December 10 ROH Final Battle event.
