First ever AEW World Champion Chris Jericho has explained how AEW ‘really won’ in the ratings against NXT Great American Bash on Wednesday.
In terms of overall average viewers, NXT came out with more for the second week in a row, with 792,000 to AEW’s 748,000.
However, Jericho took to Twitter to explain that AEW was superior in the 18-49 demographic, which TV companies see as the most important figure. He wrote:
Here’s a lesson about television ratings kids. Last night @AEWrestling was NUMBER 6 in the 18-49 demo. To tv networks & advertisers it’s the ONLY number that matters and we were up 31% in that area! So once again #AEWDynamite is the REAL winner in the Wed night ratings war!
As he pointed out, AEW came in at #6 in 18-49, while NXT was #13. AEW beat NXT in every demographic except 50+.
Chris Jericho is also correct in that TV advertisers and networks, which is how TV shows make money, are high on the 18-49 demo because they’re the ones that buy products and will do so for longer than people who are over 50.
It’s nice to see some competitive spirit, and it’ll be interesting to see how next week plays out now that the AEW World Title match has been pulled from the show, but the NXT ‘Winner Takes All’ match has been accidentally spoiled.
