That’s pretty ominous, Mr Chris Jericho.
It seems that Hideo Itami and Tye Dillinger were the last of a dying breed: wrestlers released by WWE. Or at least, that’s what AEW Championship number one contender Chris Jericho thinks.
Appearing on an episode of Busted Open Radio, Jericho stated that he doesn’t think anyone will ever be released by WWE again now that AEW is around.
He discussed Shawn Spears (Tye Dillinger) at length, and admitted he never understood how he was allowed to sit on the sidelines at WWE and not be used.
“I don’t know why [Shawn Spears] sat on the sidelines for eight months. I don’t know why a lot of guys sit on the sidelines for eight months.”
“But you know how it works up North, brother. If you fall out of grace, you’re finished being played with as Vince’s toy, you get put in the corner. Thankfully, Shawn got his release. He’s the last one that will. Nobody will ever get their release from WWE again. Nobody.
“He got his release, Cody and him are friends. Cody knew what he was capable of. I knew what he was capable of. I championed to get him. The guy is a tremendous heel. He’s an old school heel. He looks the part. Putting him with Tully Blanchard is a great idea. He’s a main eventer. We’re going to make him into a star, just by putting him with Cody Rhodes.”
Spears takes on Cody Rhodes at this weekend’s All Out show in Chicago, Illinois.
It seems as though anyone who wants out will now simply have to sit out their contracts and behave. When you see people like Jinder Mahal getting 5-year contracts, it illustrates just how desperate WWE is not to lose any more stars to AEW.
