Chris Jericho Reveals Origin Story Of His Ring Name AEW

Chris Jericho is known for his ability to shapeshift through gimmicks and names, and now he has revealed how his ring name came to be.

On a recent episode of his podcast, Talk is Jericho, aptly titled “Origin of Jericho,” the current Ring of Honor champion recalled his first match and the inception of his most well-known ring name.

He said:

“When I was in high school, in my backyard wrestling federation, my idea was to be Christian Chris Irving.”

He decided against using a Christianity-related gimmick and tried out names like “Jack Action” and “Shawn Skywalker”, which ultimately did not stick.

The Fozzy frontman then struck gold from a musical source, recalling:

“Helloween … has a record called The Walls of Jericho… I just saw Jericho. Chris Jericho sounds cool.”

The former Wizard made his debut against Lance Storm on October 2, 1990, in a match that had a 15-minute time limit.

In the same episode, Jericho offered some back story to how Storm got his name, explaining:

“Lance chose Lance Storm, and Ed [Langley] put the T in the middle. What is the answer for this, ‘What does the T stand for?’ The T stands for Thunder!”

Jericho recently shared some throwback snaps from his debut match, which you can read about right here.

“The Ocho” Chris Jericho recently acquired the Ring of Honor championship from Claudio Castagnoli during the Grand Slam edition of AEW Dynamite.

Since then, he has vowed to desecrate the title and all it stands for by facing as many previous ROH title holders as possible.

Chris Jericho will be facing former ROH champion Bryan Danielson on AEW Dynamite in Toronto, ON on October 12.
