On Saturday (November 3), Chris Jericho successfully defended his IWGP Intercontinental Championship against EVIL at Power Struggle, meaning he will be champion at Wrestle Kingdom 13 on January 4.
EVIL’s Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) stable-mate Tetsuya Naito, the man Jericho beat for the title at Dominion in June, was announced as Jericho’s Wrestle Kingdom 13 opponent.
However, there has been a snag in the plan.
In the post-match press conference and on Instagram, Jericho explained that although the match has been announced, that doesn’t necessarily mean he has to accept it.
The caption reads: “”Hey NJPW, just because you ‘announce’ a match, doesn’t mean I have to accept it. NOT APPROVED.”
This is almost certainly a work to make the fans turn on Jericho, and with Naito such a popular figure in New Japan, it’s probably going to work.
Given how Jericho won the belt and how he has since brutally attacked a number of LIJ members, I fully expect Naito to take the belt back at Wrestle Kingdom 13.
