Chris Jericho sat down with Complex Sports one day after the AEW: Dynamite Debut on TNT. Jericho was asked about the statement WWE made earlier in the day.
Jericho said he knows how they work and they are embarrassed. He went on to say even though he didn’t have the ratings and the time of the interview, WWE knows “we kicked their ass.”
He also went on to say:
“They started this. Everything that they’ve done has been reactionary to us. We’re not in a war with anybody besides ourselves…all that matters is our show.”
Okay, Chris. I guess Cody’s Hammer to the Throne was just a random skit added to a show.
Whoever started it, AEW definitely one the first battle. AEW drew 1.4 million viewers, while NXT only drew 0.8 million. So, what’s the right metaphor?
“They kinda started this war, and the very first night they got destroyed. Big deal, it’s our first debut, but they have to come back and say ‘it’s a marathon and not a one-night sprint.’ Who’s ever said it’s a one-night sprint? It’s not a war for us. Now, we’re placed in one, and we’re gonna kick ass.”
Whether it’s a war or not, 1.4 million viewers just in the US alone far outperformed what many folks were guessing. NXT has been right at 1 million viewers each week.
To get 1.4 is impressive for a company who has never been on TV and only held a handful of shows. Last night’s show was good, but far from perfect.
It will be interesting to see how the shows continue to perform. If you look at the two shows, NXT threw everything they had at their 2 hour debut. However, AEW seemed to have plenty of room for improvement and still has a few tricks up their sleeves.
