Clarification On John Cena Status Following Rumours Of Contract Expiration

It was reported last week that top WWE star Rey Mysterio was actually wrestling for the company without a contract. This comes after his 18-month deal, which is signed in September 2018, reportedly expired.

According to reports that have emerged, Rey has not yet re-signed his WWE contract after failing to agree on financial terms with higher-ups. Rey reportedly asked for a pay rise, a request which was rejected.

Speaking of huge WWE stars letting their contracts expire, rumours emerged yesterday that multi-time WWE Champion and Hollywood movie star John Cena was no longer under contract with Vince McMahon’s company.

Many Twitter users claimed that Dave Meltzer reported that Cena was no longer under contract in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, with fans speculating about Cena joining AEW or NJPW.

Sorry to disappoint fans that were hoping to see Cena wrestle their favourite AEW and NJPW stars, but it looks like these rumours are false. Dave Meltzer does not say anything about John Cena’s contract expiring in the latest Newsletter.

Also, Cena has stated in previous interviews/media appearances that he doesn’t see himself working for any other wrestling company than WWE, so even if his deal did expire, I wouldn’t expect to see him working matches with the likes of Kenny Omega or Hiroshi Tanahashi.
