According to CM Punk, he did main event WrestleMania, because nobody could follow this instant classic on the night.
It has been well documented that one of CM Punk’s main goals in wrestling was to main event WrestleMania. As per Punk himself, nobody could follow him and Undertaker’s match at WrestleMania 29, so in his eyes, he achieved his goal.
Speaking with Robbie Fox on My Mom’s Basement, Punk noted that he both cared too much and too little about his MetLife Stadium match. Claiming that the night peaked with Undertaker’s 21st WrestleMania victory, Punk stated that no other match on the card came close.
Here is the full quote:
“Given all the circumstances leading up to it and everything that happened after it, that’s the most defining punk rock moment of my entire career. I didn’t care about anything. I was a man possessed and I simultaneously didn’t give a f**k and cared way too much at the same time.
“I went out there and f**king absolutely destroyed it. They couldn’t follow me, no matter what they said. People, to this day, will be like, ‘You never main evented WrestleMania.’ Yes, I did. It was that one. You should’ve packed it up and f**king went home after that.”
Matches that followed Undertaker’s last Streak win included Triple H vs Brock Lesnar, and The Rock vs John Cena for the WWE Championship.
CM Punk also recently discussed his place in wrestling, admitting that it isn’t his world anymore. Originally walking out of WWE before a planned Triple H match, Punk has also noted that he has no interest in revisiting this rivalry.
Speaking of main events, Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair headlined the first night of WrestleMania 37 in a historic match. The second night was capped off with the Universal Championship three-way bout, which Lance Storm admitted to turning off.
