CM Punk and Cody Rhodes have commented on fellow former AEW star Ricky Starks – now Ricky Saints – joining WWE.
Saints got his start in AEW during the pandemic via Cody Rhodes’ TNT Championship open challenge.
From there, they went on to become close friends, with Saints having been spotted supporting Rhodes at WWE shows on more than one occasion.
A couple of years later, when AEW debuted its Collision show headed up by CM Punk, Punk handpicked Saints to be one of the stars of that show, with Saints ultimately being Punk’s last feud in AEW.
With Saints making his official WWE NXT in-ring debut last night, Corey Graves on commentary – without mentioning AEW – noted that Saints had been a protege of Rhodes and Punk prior to him joining WWE.
Graves then said he’d contacted both Rhodes and Punk for their thoughts on Saints, with Rhodes responding by saying:
“Ricky is a maverick in every sense of the word, and the most naturally gifted wrestler since Barry Windham.
“Ricky is my most trusted and perhaps only friend left.”
Meanwhile, according to Graves, Punk said:
“Ricky has a natural swagger that most superstars spend their entire lives chasing.”
Saints picked up the win in his NXT debut as he and Je’Von Evans defeated Wes Lee and Ethan Page in a tag match, although it essentially became a singles match between Saints and Lee after Evans and Page fought off.
