CM Punk Responds To Criticism Of Facing Another ‘Random Opponent’

AEW star CM Punk has fired back at criticism of him facing another “random opponent” on tonight’s episode of Dynamite.

It was announced on social media yesterday that Punk will be wrestling Lee Moriarty tonight, in Moriarty’s first singles match on Dynamite.

Punk’s opponents in AEW so far have been Darby Allin, Powerhouse Hobbs, Daniel Garcia, Matt Sydal, Bobby Fish, Eddie Kingston, and most recently QT Marshall last week.

He’s won all of his matches so has a 7-0 record, but some fans have expressed that they haven’t thought it’s been constructive to have Punk wrestling so many guys who you wouldn’t consider ‘big names’.

As such, one Twitter user reacted to the Moriarty match announcement by writing:

Punk has words with mjf so this week he fights a random opponent. This isnt trying to be hateful, i hope aew succeeds. But the story or rivalry buildups or reason for matchups is sore lacking. Except for a sprinkle of substance here and there, they could just pull names from hats

Punk responded with what many people saw as a jab at WWE, as he wrote: “Oh maybe we should tag to see if we can coexist”, which in itself led to some more criticism from the usual ‘stop mentioning WWE’ mob.

It’s pretty clear that Punk’s been having a lot of fun since his return, both in the ring and on social media, and he’s building towards a big match with MJF that it would be silly to rush.

The announced card for tonight’s Dynamite in Atlanta, Georgia is as follows:

  • CM Punk vs. Lee Moriarty
  • Bryan Danielson vs. Alan Angels
  • Kris Statlander vs. Ruby Soho
  • Cody Rhodes vs. Andrade El Idolo – Street Fight
  • Billy & Colten Gunn vs. Darby Allin & Sting
