CM Punk has opened up about adding a ‘new coat of paint’ to his recent WWE storyline involving Roman Reigns.
Their paths only really started to coalesce ahead of WWE Survivor Series: WarGames, with Paul Heyman bringing CM Punk into the fold as Roman Reigns, The Usos and Sami Zayn teamed to defeat The Bloodline (Solo Sikoa, Jacob Fatu, Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa) and Bronson Reed.
While Paul Heyman’s favor owed to CM Punk saw him main event WrestleMania 41 with his best friend in his corner, things didn’t end well for Reigns or Punk at Night One.
During a recent interview with Deadline, Punk was asked about WWE ‘leaning heavy’ on the Reigns angle in a Triple Threat match that also featured Seth Rollins.
Asked whether it was the intentional plan, CM Punk would open up about Roman Reigns being on top in his absence, saying:
“I think it’s something that people haven’t seen a lot of. They’ve seen me and Seth, they’ve seen Roman and Seth. So the new coat of paint on things is me and Roman going at it.
“He’s been on top since I left, so part of me wanted to show him, ‘Yeah, you’re on top, because I wasn’t here. Now I’m back, and I belong exactly where I was when I left, exactly where you’ve been for the last 10 years’.”
Discussing the betrayal at the hands of Paul Heyman at WrestleMania 41, Punk promised that receipts are coming for his former best friend and Roman Reigns.
Punk left WWE in 2014, with his profile being moved to the alumni section in July of that year and would effectively retire was a professional wrestler.
His run in AEW would start in August 2021 and run through to his termination in September 2023 with his WWE return taking place at Survivor Series: WarGames in November 2023.
