CM Punk and Jeff Hardy have a long history together. Back in 2009, they feuded over the World Heavyweight Championship and Hardy’s history with substance abuse was a big part of the storyline. Now, Punk has said WWE was wrong to use Hardy’s recent DUI in their SmackDown storyline.
Punk appeared last night on WWE Backstage where they discussed the Hardy situation at length. WWE came under fire for the angle last week as Hardy appeared to be involved in a hit-and-run with Elias. Here is the quote, courtesy of Fightful:
“I’m speaking from experience because I worked extensively with Jeff. He, at that point, was not at a great place mentally and physically. My thing with this story is that somebody’s sobriety is very fragile and important. We talk about how Jeff is okay with it and he greenlit. To me, it is the responsibility to get in front of that, whether it be the company or a writer, and be like ‘no, we ‘re not doing that.’ Cleaning your life up and getting sober, we can champion that in many ways. You don’t put him in front of a moving car.”
Hardy did appear at the end of SmackDown, attacking Sheamus but the damage had been done.
His feud with CM Punk in 2009 ended up winning the Rivalry of the Year award in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Hardy left WWE after its conclusion.
