A new update has been provided on the status of CM Punk in WWE and this one is from a backstage perspective.
CM Punk’s name is being thrown around for possible runs in WWE and TNA/IMPACT Wrestling, with Rocky Romero also recently discussing the possibility of a Punk run in NJPW.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has giving insight from the WWE side of things, writing:
Basically every rumor out there has been denied to us regarding backstory and his coming. This is pro wrestling and anything can happen, but stories like he was in front of the board of directors is not accurate.
Those in creative have not been told of anything involving him and those who would normally be in the know about these things, including on the big surprises like Cody Rhodes stuff before anyone else, don’t know anything.
That doesn’t mean he’s not coming, just the backstories regarding his coming aren’t accurate. I was told weeks ago that it was a “no,” just like the other times talks had been opened through his reps.
But like any “no” circumstances could change it. If they feel they need a business jolt, they’ve got it in their back pocket. If they smell blood on the AEW carcass, the Punk move on television can be their shark response. If they believe there is a fan groundswell for it, they could give it a shot.
Grayson Waller recently posted a photo to Instagram, including a caption from CM Pipe’s pipebomb promo, which Punk has since responded to.
Chants for “CM Punk” were heard at WWE Crown Jewel on November 4, 2023, in Saudi Arabia, as well as during Raw this week at one point.
It was also recently reported that WWE had prepared talent at Fastlane for anticipated questions from the media about Punk, which didn’t end up happening.
CM Punk continues to be a strong merch seller for AEW despite being fired from the company in September 2023 and being inactive for the majority of the year before that.
