CM Punk has addressed his controversial Saudi Arabia tweet from 2020, ahead of competing at Night of Champions.
The June 28 WWE premium live event set to emanate from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia will be headlined by a WWE Championship match, with CM Punk to challenge for John Cena’s gold.
Punk being announced for this match has been a big talking point, following a post Punk shared back in 2020, when he wasn’t with the company.
In response to The Miz taking a jab at Punk on WWE Backstage, Punk appeared to criticise The Miz for wrestling at a WWE show in Saudi Arabia, tweeting:
“Go suck a blood money covered dick in Saudi Arabia you f**king dork.”
While this tweet has been alluded to in the build to Night of Champions, CM Punk directly commented on this tweet during the June 27 Night of Champions Kickoff event.
After receiving mixed reactions during his entrance, Punk singled out a fan in the front row and said:
“This guy wants me to apologise for a mean tweet I wrote six years ago. Listen, it legitimately had nothing to do with Saudi Arabia, I woke up and I was crabby, and I wrote a mean tweet to The Miz. I apologised to The Miz…”
Punk then shook the fan’s hand and apologised, saying:
“I sincerely apologise to you, and all of Saudi Arabia. I am not perfect by any means, sometimes as human beings, we screw up.
“The beautiful thing is, everything is a lesson learned, and now here I am. You have invited me to your country, and I am grateful to be here, thank you very much.”
