CM Punk has revealed that a former WWE higher up told him not to wear his tribute gear to “Macho Man” Randy Savage on television.
Macho Man passed away in May 2011, and many WWE stars paid tribute to the iconic wrestler, including CM Punk, who wore gear inspired by Savage on WWE television for a few weeks after his passing.
Speaking in a WWE video going over a number of his previous looks, Punk revealed that a former WWE higher up told him not to wear the gear on WWE television, before Punk went ahead and wore it on television.
He said:
“I wanted to pay homage to a classic pair of gear, twofold really. Pink looks great on me, and this is an homage to the gear he wore at WrestleMania 3 taking on Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat.
“I commissioned my gear maker to make this gear, and I won’t name names, but somebody very high in the office walked past and saw it, found me and said ‘do not wear that gear on television’. I said ‘you got it’, and I wore the gear on television, because that’s what I do, I’m going to pay homage to Randy Savage, whether you like it or not.”
