Cody Rhodes made his return to WWE SmackDown tonight to set up his match for Wrestlepalooza on September 20.
After Rhodes defeated John Cena to win back the Undisputed WWE Championship at SummerSlam, he was targeted by Drew McIntyre on SmackDown.
McIntyre’s attack on Rhodes wrote Rhodes off TV while he was away filming for the new Street Fighter movie.
Also during the time he’s been away, Rhodes and his wife Brandi welcomed their second daughter.
The main event of tonight’s September 12 episode of SmackDown saw McIntyre take on Randy Orton, with McIntyre scoring the win.
After his victory, McIntyre attempted the same attack on Orton that he struck Rhodes with – a Claymore through the announce desk.
However, just as McIntyre was getting ready to strike, he was interrupted by the entrance and return of Cody Rhodes.
After Rhodes had successfully thwarted McIntyre, he announced that he’ll defend the WWE Championship against McIntyre at the upcoming Wrestlepalooza premium live event on ESPN.
