Last night on Raw during Corey Graves’ ‘Electric Chair’ Q&A session with Sami Zayn, the former NXT Champion named dropped AEW much to the shock of the crowd and those watching at home. On WWE’s YouTube channel, Zayn’s reference to the rival promotion was edited out of the highlight clip, sparking speculation that Zayn went off the script.
There are conflicting reports about whether or not the line was scripted, with both Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez being told different things from their sources within the company. Below is a transcript of their conversation on Wrestling Observer Radio:
Meltzer: “So the AEW line was scripted, then they pulled it from the [YouTube] video afterwards, and I actually asked someone like, ‘What’s going on?” All I heard of was, ‘It was so f*cking stupid.’”
Alvarez: “I know you were told one thing, I was told that it was not scripted, okay? And I know we were both told something scripted…”
Meltzer: “Ok if it’s not scripted, the dude’s going to be suspended.”
Alvarez: “They’re going to suspend Sami Zayn?”
Meltzer: “If you go against the script on live TV and say ‘AEW’ they’re going to suspend you for sure. They’re not going to fire you because they won’t fire anybody, but they’ll suspend you guy. The person who told me would know cause it would’ve been in the meeting so it’s in the meeting -“
Alvarez: “Well the person who told me would also have been in the meeting so, either they’re messing with people.”
Meltzer: “Well the person who I’m talking to wasn’t messing with me, because he was really -“
Alvarez: “I’m not saying messing with you. I’m saying it is possible that there are things that people are being told that aren’t legitimate or are legitimate…f*cking with ‘the boys’.”
Meltzer: “Oh, you mean the idea that they’re telling the boys that it wasn’t scripted while they scripted it? Yeah I can believe that we’re going to be in an era of that. I definitely can see that. Everywhere. That we’re going to be in an era like that, which turns into an era of mistrust, I’ve been through this one before too…”
The removal of the line from WWE’s YouTube clip is certainly interesting and would make it appear as if they regretted it, or if Sami Zayn went off the script. WrestleTalk will provide more information if and when it becomes available.
Thanks to WrestleZone for the transcription.
