When the controversial UFC star Conor McGregor announced his retirement from MMA last month, speculation began that McGregor would be appearing at WrestleMania 35.
Whilst Conor did not appear on the “grandest stage of them all”, he did tease a run with WWE on Twitter the following day after congratulating fellow Irish star Beck Lynch on her WrestleMania main event win.
Congrats to Irelands Becky Lynch, the WWE’s first Champ Champ.
Wow!
What a match these ladies put on! Ronda Rousey is something special in that ring, as is Charlotte Flair of the Flair dynasty!
Stephanie McMahon you are right, I could not do what these athletes do.
Or could I…— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) April 8, 2019
Not only did WWE’s Twitter account retweet Conor’s message, but their Chief Brand Officer, Stephanie McMahon responded to Conor’s tweet, suggesting he should “try” this out.
.@TheNotoriousMMA you never know until you try! :))) https://t.co/bUktMCGa5h

This only fuelled the rumours that WWE will look to bring in McGregor. With Brock Lesnar seemingly heading back to UFC for a title fight against Daniel Cormier this summer and Ronda Rousey taking time away from the ring to start a family, WWE are without a big former UFC star on their roster, and Conor could be the man to fix that.
Whilst Stephanie might have seemed receptive to McGregor, one former WWE star seemed less enthusiastic. Conor referred to Becky as the first “double champ”, and some fans said Chris Jericho, the first Undisputed World Champion, achieved the feat first. However, Conor disagreed.
One of these is a WCW belt.
Both belts must be won under the same organization and both titles must be fully unified also.
Interim titles do not make the cut.
The belts must also be held consecutively.
This is for true “Champ Champ” status.
Yours sincerely,

Y2J would take issue with his claims and hit back at McGregor. The AEW star would even go as far as to refer to Conor as a “mark”.
Thanks for the explanation of the rules Champ Champ. But Both belts were won under the same organization, on the same night. Now quit being a mark and move along, junior. https://t.co/2HYkmdAI5i
