Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar have plenty of history inside the WWE ring, but it was their recent feud that saw a change in dynamics.
Historically, Lesnar has been the unstoppable force accompanied by Paul Heyman, the all-powerful heel against the hope for the future that was the face Roman Reigns.
Their most recent rivalry came to an end at SummerSlam with Reigns retaining the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.
This time, however, Reigns was the villain and Lesnar the hero of the piece.
Speaking to The Ringer, Reigns explained why, with Paul Heyman now by his side, Cowboy Brock was the gamechanger they all needed, saying:
“To me, if he doesn’t level up and showcase the Cowboy Brock character, then don’t nobody give a s**t about Brock next to the Tribal Chief.
“I was able to push my level up, which he knew, OK, ‘this guy’s creating different levels and layers to this, let me step my game up.’ And he did that.”
With both men having quite the legacy in WWE, Reigns saw an opportunity to work together to elevate what they were doing further, explaining:
“That was just a perfect recipe of two performers who want to be the best, and both have pretty legitimate claims to that territory.
“And when you get two guys who compete, it’s not backstabbing.
“We’re looking each other in the eyes and we’re telling each other, ‘I’m better than you and if you don’t show me, then this is the end of the road for you.’
“People probably said, ‘Oh God, not Brock-Roman again.’
“And then we go out there and deliver a classic.”
Reigns sees this evolution of their craft as the ‘key to the kingdom’, reflecting:
“How do we continually get better?
“How do we upgrade?
“How do we push ourselves to the next level?
“How do we continue to move these goal posts?”
Reigns will have another opportunity to move the goal posts when he takes part in Survivor Series WarGames where The Bloodline (Reigns, The Usos, Sami Zayn & Solo Sikoa) take on The Brawling Brutes (Sheamus, Butch & Ridge Holland), Drew McIntyre and Kevin Owens.
