# Current Champion Details AEW Star Backstage Talk After ‘Struggling’ To Find Character

A current champion has detailed a backstage conversation with a fellow AEW star after previous “struggles” with finding a character in wrestling.

Currently reigning as one half of the AEW Women’s Tag Team Champions along with Willow Nightingale, Harley Cameron has become easily one of the most entertaining characters on AEW programming in recent years.

While she’s become known for her love of ventriloquism and making songs, Cameron admitted in a new interview with [TMZ Sports’ Inside the Ring](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfKcXHc1Pns) that she initially struggled to carve out her own identity within wrestling.

Recalling initial attempts to play an overly Australian character as well as a “sexy mean girl” on the independent scene, Cameron credited a conversation with QT Marshall that implored her to just be an “elevated version of herself” on TV:

*“It’s funny, when I first started wrestling I was trying to figure out my character and who I was because it was really instilled in me by my coaches how important that is.*

*“I initially when I was on the independent scene at the start of my career and also in training, I was trying so hard to be a character. And that’s kind of what I struggled with was finding what that was. I even did a few independent scenes wrestling as this full Australian character and I had a koala puppet and that was s\*\*t.*

*“Then I tried to be like a sexy mean girl and it was funny because it wasn’t until I did RJ City’s Hey! (EW) and he just interviewed me as myself organically that I got to show my personality and who I was. It was actually QT Marshall who spoke to me after it and he said, ‘That is entertaining, you yourself, you’re insane in the best way, that you don’t need to be this person, you as a person, you’re every entertaining naturally, you should be yourself.’*

*“It’s one of those things where a lot of the time people say the cliche, your best character is you, your natural self times 100. I don’t think that applies to everything and everyone because I definitely love a lot of the over the top obscure characters that have come in the history of wrestling, but I figure for me it’s just worked being an elevated version of myself.”*
