AEW
AEW reportedly has a date scheduled for the return of CM Punk and seemingly the debut of its new Saturday night show.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Punk is scheduled for Saturday, June 17 at the United Center in his hometown of Chicago.
Meltzer noted that not everything is officially finalized yet but the building has been booked for that date.
The show is expected to be announced “very shortly”.
This of course comes after reports of AEW launching the new Saturday show, likely called AEW Collision based on a trademark filing, with a returning CM Punk planned to be the top star of that show.
The plan is said to be to present the new show as equal to Dynamite in terms of star power, presentation, etc.
There have been reports of a planned ‘brand split’ between Dynamite and the Saturday show, largely as a way to keep people separate if they have issues with each other (like the Elite and Punk, but obviously there are others too). According to Meltzer, the Elite and Blackpool Combat Club will be staying on Dynamite.
There had reportedly been a meeting planned with Punk, Chris Jericho, Tony Khan, FTR and maybe others, so we’ll keep you updated if there’s any word on that – Meltzer mentioned in the Observer that this meeting has not yet taken place.
The decision to have Punk return was reportedly made “many weeks ago”, but two weeks back there was a snag that has evidently since been figured out.
As well as the June 17 show at the United Center, the June 21 episode of Dynamite is also in Chicago at Wintrust Arena.
