Darby Allin On Being The First Male Singles Champion Not From WWE: ‘It Means The World To Me’

A lost statistic in the last month of AEW has been that Darby Allin became the first male singles champion to not have worked for WWE. Needless to say, it was a big deal for him.

In his recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Allin was asked about the accomplishment. In short, he said it means the world to him. Here is the quote:

“That means the world to me. We have creative freedom here. That’s why I want to be here. I can be real. You need to step up and cross that line, and I’m the embodiment of that for younger talent. I would not want to work anywhere else, period.”

Allin won the TNT Championship from Cody Rhodes at AEW’s Full Gear pay per view last month. It was his first pay per view championship match and the first time in four tries he was able to beat Rhodes in AEW.

Since then, he has been at odds with Team Taz. Until this week, they had been his biggest adversary but that was until Sting made his debut, confronting Darby Allin and Cody Rhodes. It remains to be seen what will come of this interaction.
