Most weeks you’d be lucky to get more than a 4 star match out of Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, and a five star match is a rare and wondrous thing.
So when you hear that big Dave has awarded four matches a 5 star rating, including a 5 1/2 star rating, it’s probably been quite a good week.
The matches in question are:
- Sanada vs. Kazuchika Okada – G1 Climax Day 13 – 5 Stars
- Naito vs. Shingo Takagi – G1 Climax Day 14 – 5 Stars
- Shingo Takagi vs. Tomohiro Ishii – 5 1/2 Stars
- Bandido & Flamita & Rey Horus vs. Puma King & Black Taurus & Laredo Kid – AAA TripleMania – 5 Stars
Now, it’s often said that Dave Meltzer is biased when it comes to Japanese wrestling, and perhaps he is, but it’s also fair to say that he doesn’t just give out a five star rating unless a match truly deserves it.
The G1 Climax this year has without a doubt been one of, if not the best tournament in wrestling in history in terms of match quality, and the addition of the likes of Jon Moxley has helped bring more eyes to the product.
If you can, get a subscription to NJPW World or another service that allows you to watch these matches, because we guarantee you won’t regret it.
Oh, and make sure you’ve got plenty of time, because the four matches combined are about two hours long.
